PAGASA: LPA on way out but may still intensify into cyclone

A low-pressure area (LPA) is exiting the country after bringing rains to parts of Luzon over the weekend, but may still intensify into a cyclone.

But state weather forecasters said that even if the LPA becomes a cyclone, it would already be too far to affect any part of the country by then.

"Pwede pa po pero palabas na ito ... nasa loob ng Philippine area of responsibility pero malayo na (It can still intensify into a cyclone but even if it does, it would already be too far to affect any part of the country)," Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) forecaster Gilbert Aquino said in an interview on dzBB radio Monday.

Should the LPA intensify into a cyclone, it will be code-named "Basyang."

Pagasa's 5 a.m. bulletin indicated that as of 2 a.m. Monday, the LPA was estimated at 760 km northeast of Basco, Batanes.

PAGASA said the eastern sections of northern and Central Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms while the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over northern and Central Luzon and the coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
