Comelec willing to reset date of special polls

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is open to proposals to move the date of special elections from May 28, a Friday, to May 29 to give way to the Muslims' day of worship.

As of Thursday, however, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said they have not received any petition or complaint to move the date, and so the original schedule remains.

The Comelec set special elections for 7 municipalities in Lanao del Sur, 2 barangays in Basilan, certain areas in Iloilo and Samar on May 28.

Elections were not held in these areas for various reasons--in Iloilo and Samar, due to interchanged ballots; in Lanao del Sur and Basilan, due to security threats.

Commissioner Rene Sarmiento earlier said results from these areas would no longer affect the presidential and vice-presidential races.

However, he said these elections are necessary before winners in the party-list elections are proclaimed. -- report from Ryan Chua, ABS-CBN News
